Philippe Nayer approaches paper not simply as a support, but as a territory — a space where writing, gesture, memory and matter continuously intersect.

In his work, handwritten traces, ink, stains, fragments and superimposed layers accumulate, disappear and re-emerge. Writing gradually moves beyond its linguistic function: words become rhythm, signs become image, and the surface becomes a field of memory.

Paper carries the evidence of this process. It is folded, marked, layered, interrupted and transformed. Rather than concealing time, Nayer allows it to remain visible. Each work becomes a constructed archive in which presence and absence, permanence and fragility coexist.

​

His artistic trajectory between Europe, Africa, Asia, further informs this exploration of the relationship between writing and image, without confining the work to a single visual tradition. Gesture becomes a form of passage — between cultures, between language and abstraction, between what can be read and what can only be perceived.

​

Paper as Territory, Memory as Matter brings these dimensions together. Here, paper is both physical material and conceptual space: a place where experience leaves a trace, where fragments acquire new relationships, and where memory is not represented but materially constructed.

 

Presented by MERAKI.IFL at ArtOnPaper Brussels 2026, the exhibition invites us to encounter paper as something more than a surface — as a living territory of time, gesture and memory.
